About Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) Technology
Distributed acoustic/vibrational sensing system detect vibrations and capture acoustic energies along the optical fiber. Existing fiber optic networks can function as acoustic sensors, collecting real-time data to help the operators make informed decisions. Classification algorithms are used to identify and locate events such as cable faults, pipeline leaks, third party intrusion (TPI).
Various DAS technologies are available in the market; the most common is based on coherent optical time domain reflectometry (C-OTDR). C-OTDR uses Rayleigh scattering, enabling the detection of acoustic signals over long distances. The measuring instrument sends a coherent laser pulse along an optical fiber (sensor cable). Scattering centers within the fiber ensure that the fiber acts like a distributed interferometer with a measuring length that corresponds to the laser pulse length (e.g. 10 meters).
