Detailed S-wave velocity structure of sediment and crust

In a recent publication in Earth, Planets and Space, AP Sensing’s Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology was essential in obtaining insights on S-wave velocity structure of sedimentary layer and uppermost crust!

S-wave velocity provides important information about the rheology of the overriding plate and enhances the accuracy of earthquake hypocenter determination. Using Ocean Bottom Seismometers, estimations of the velocity of S-waves have been possible. However, these estimations are limited and do not provide the required spatial resolution. With AP Sensing’s Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) interrogator, strain rate measurements with very high special resolution over a long distance are warranted.

By applying a seismic interferometry method with FK filtering to the DAS data with high spatial resolution, Shun Fukushima et al. identified a new approach to S-wave velocity structure estimation and made it possible to obtain the S-wave structure of sedimentary layer and uppermost crust to a depth of 6.8 km.
